In-Person Auditions for Crowns Saturday, November 20

About the show: 

A gospel musical by Regina Taylor based on the book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry, this celebration of Black heritage follows Yolanda who is transplanted from Brooklyn to South Carolina in the wake of a family tragedy. As Yolanda struggles to find her place in her new home, she meets a circle of women who show her how to step into her power by donning crowns.

MOTHER SHAW/Obatala – Orisha of wisdom

MABEL/ Shango – Orisha of fire

VELMA / Oya – Orisha of storms

WANDA / Oshun – Orisha of the rivers and water

JEANETTE / Yemaya – Orisha of seas

YOLANDA / Ogun 

MAN / Elegba – Orisha of crossroads

Important Information:

This production runs Feb.17-Mar. 6 in the Straz Center’s Jaeb Theater. Rehearsals will begin the week of Jan. 17, held weeknights and weekend days. All roles are paid $400 per week.

All performers must submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination prior to receiving an in-person audition slot. All Straz Center workers, both on and off stage, must be vaccinated.

In-person auditions for Crowns will be held at the Straz Center on Saturday, November 20.

This call is exclusive to performers 18 years and older in the Tampa Bay area. We cannot offer housing, travel, or per diem for out-of-town performers and are unable to hire member of Actor’s Equity Association at this time.

Auditions for Nunsense A-men

Seeking BIPOC performers to audition for this hilarious, all-male version of Nunsense.

Available Roles:

SISTER MARY HUBERT, baritone-tenor — Mistress of Novices and second in command, she always competes with the Mother Superior. Very kind; tries to be understanding and diplomatic. Always ready to kick up her heels.

SISTER MARY AMNESIA, tenor — Lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. The picture of innocence but a tad loopy. Can’t remember her past, so she looks at each day with childlike joy

SISTER MARY LEO, baritone-tenor — The novice who wants to be a ballerina. Was a professional dancer before entering the convent and is always eager to display her talent. Impressionable and young, easily led astray.

Seeking Bilingual (Spanish/English) actors

The Straz is seeking bilingual (English/Spanish) actors for a potential project in the 2022-2023 season.  We anticipate developing a production of an internationally recognized title that can be performed in both English and Spanish. This project may include some travel in the summer/fall of 2022, and approximately 3 months of work in early 2023.  AEA and non-union actors ages 23 – 75 that have their own housing in the Tampa Bay area or are within daily commuting distance are encouraged to apply.
