‘La Verbena de la Paloma’ (The Fair of the Virgin of la Paloma ) is probably the best known zarzuela (Spanish operetta) on an international level, and which has been performed in many theaters in Spain and abroad since it’s premier, back in 1894. Considered by many as one of the greatest zarzuela’s of all time, the zarzuela is set in Madrid, at around the time it was premiered (1894) during the festivity of the Virgin of the Holy Spirit.

Composed by Tomás Bretón with a libretto by Ricardo de la Vega, the story focuses on the little love drama between sweethearts Julián and Susana whose love endures the amusing meddling of an old bachelor suitor. Susana and her sister Casta live together with their aunt Antonia, and they flirt with the apothecary Don Hilarion, who has illusions, without realizing that the two young people just want to have fun. After some adventures at the festival, the love of Julián and Susana triumphs!

Directed by Diego Iglesias and featuring the BADO Orchestra directed by Ezra Haugabrooks, this zarzuela presents a parade of characters drawn from Madrid’s Belle Epoque. The dialogues are sharp and witty, and the catchy music includes some of the most celebrated zarzuela tunes, such as the famous habanera,¿Dónde vas con mantón de Manila?

Presented in Spanish with English Supertitles, La Verbena is perfect for all audiences!
